Anti-government militants in their latest wave of targeting government interests shot dead the district police chief of Shirin Tagab district in the northwest Faryab province, a local official said Friday.

"Taliban insurgents ambushed the car of Abdul Wahed the district police chief of Shirin Tagab on Thursday evening killing him and his bodyguard and wounding two others," Syed Laqman Gahriktold Xinhua.

The militants have focused their gun from restive southern region to the relatively peaceful northern provinces of Afghanistan as several times they attacked government interests in the northern Kunduz and Baghlan provinces over the past couple of months.

Taliban fighters have vowed to speed up activities this year in Afghanistan.
