At least 19 people were killed when the bus in which they were traveling plunged into 150 meter deep gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh Tuesday, a senior police official said.

"Initial probe has revealed that the accident happened when the bus was probably negotiating a curve in the hilly areas near Bagdaigarh village of the state's Chamba district. Some 19 dead bodies have been recovered so far in the rescue operations. The toll may go up," district deputy police chief D.K. Chaudhary told the media.

Senior state government officials have rushed to the spot from state capital Shimla.

Traffic accidents rate is among the highest in the world.
