A pile driver tipped over Tuesday at a construction site in central Tokyo, injuring six people, police and firefighters said.

At around 11:10 a.m. local time (0210 GMT), the pile driver, belonging to Tokyo-based civil engineering firm Taiyo Foundation Co., lost balance and fell sideways, hitting two passers-by and crushing a truck.

Of the six injured, an old female passerby, who was hit by the 28-meter-long arm of the construction machine, was in a life-threatening condition, suffering from a cardio respiratory arrest.

The operator of the machine was also seriously injured while the three men, who were rescued out of the crushed truck, and the other pedestrian were not in a critical condition.

Rescuers work at the site where a pile driver fell down in Tokyo, capital of Japan, April 14, 2009. The giant pile driver fell down here on Tuesday leaving six people injured and two of them were badly hurt.
