An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck off the Pacific island of Tonga on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The quake, occurred at 12:16 a.m. New Zealand local time Tuesday (12:16 GMT Monday), was centered 145 km south of Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa, and at a depth of 84.6 km.

No tsunami warning was issued by the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
