Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi went into the Istana Negara (National Palace) here Thursday morning to seek an audience with Malaysian Supreme Head Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Local media said that Badawi was seeking the supreme head's permission to resign and hand over the post of prime minister to Najib Tun Razak, describing it as the beginning of power transition.

Badawi is scheduled to hand over the post of prime minister to Najib, who has already become the president of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), the leading ruling party in the country.

Badawi chaired his last Cabinet meeting as the Prime Minister on Wednesday, reminding his colleagues to support the new leader and continue with policies that he had initiated, local media said.

It was reported that Najib was expected to be sworn as Malaysia' s 6th Prime Minister on Friday.
