Twenty people were injured in a clash between supporters of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) and members of an Islamist association in southern Turkey, Dogan News Agency reported Monday.

The clash began late Sunday after the PKK supporters attacked the building of the Islamist association with stones and Molotov cocktails in the southern Adana province, according to the report.

Turkish police had detained seven suspects in connection with the incident, and beefed up security in the region, the report added.

The PKK took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. Some 40,000 people have been killed in the over-two-decade conflict.

Turkish warplanes have been striking PKK targets in northern Iraq in the past few months. The Turkish forces take tougher actions against the PKK after the country's legislature extended the government's mandate on Oct. 8 to launch cross-border operations against the rebels in northern Iraq.
