The Bangladeshi government on Wednesday announced to fully lift the state of emergency, promulgated nearly two years ago, from Dec. 17 before the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled on Dec. 29.

The cabinet-level Commerce Adviser of the Bangladesh caretaker government Hossain Zillur Rahman made the announcement at a press conference here on Wednesday.

He said the government also decided to lift restrictions on meetings and rallies from Dec. 12 for the sake of conducting election campaigns.

The government took the decision of withdrawing the state of emergency with the approval of President Iajuddin Ahmed.

The government announcement came one day before the last date of withdrawal of candidatures for the 9th parliament elections.

All major political parties have been demanding the lifting of the state of emergency before the elections.

The general election was originally due on Jan. 22, 2007, but was postponed following violent disputes over the impartiality of election issues, which also led to an imposition of a state of emergency from Jan. 11, 2007.
