The Azerbaijani ruling party nominated incumbent President Ilham Aliyev on Saturday as a candidate for the presidential elections slated for Oct. 15, the Interfax news agency reported.
The ruling Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan) party unanimously agreed to nominate Aliyev, who was elected president in October 2003, as its candidate to run for a second five-year term.
"In case of my election I will defend Azerbaijan's national interests and work to strengthen the state," Aliyev said in a speech at the party's congress.
However, two leading opposition parties, Musavat and the Democratic Party, announced Saturday that they would boycott the elections, citing unfair competition.
