The Communist Party Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) candidate Subash Chandra Nemwang has been unanimously elected the chairman of Nepali Constituent Assembly (CA) on Wednesday.

According to a leading website, eKantipur.com report, Nemwang was elected as none of the parties filed the candidacy for the post of the CA chair.

The CA secretariat had earlier scheduled the election of CA chair for Thursday.

Previously, Nemwang had assumed the office of Speaker of the interim parliament.

Nemwang, 55, was appointed Speaker after the reinstatement of the House of Representative following the people's movement in April 2006.

Also a CPN-UML central committee member, Nemwang used to serve as a lawyer.

He was reappointed the Speaker of the Interim Legislature-Parliament after the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) joined the government on April 1, 2007.

Meanwhile, the CA meeting held Wednesday morning passed its first amended working procedures.

The CA's first amended working procedure mentions that a majority of the then present CA members is required for the election of CA chairman. Earlier, the working procedure required the majority of all the CA members for the election.

The next meeting of the CA has been scheduled to take place on Thursday.
