Myanmar formally announces ratification of new constitution draft

The ruling Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) formally announced Thursday promulgation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Constitution (2008), the draft of which was ratified in this month's nationwide referendum, the State Radio reported in a night broadcast.

The approval was signed by SPDC Chairman Senior-General Than Shwe.

The draft constitution received an overwhelming votes cast in favor by 24,764,124 or 92.48 percent of turn-out voters in the nationwide referendum held for two rounds during this month. The number of the turn-out was 26,776,675 or 98.12 percent out of eligible voters of 27,288,827 in the whole country.

The number of vote-against was 1,631,712 or 6.1 percent, while canceled votes went to 380,839 or 1.42 percent.

There is a total population of 57,370,713 in Myanmar and the ballot castings were held in 325 townships.
