Sixty-six political parties have registered with the Indonesian electoral commission to compete in the direct legislative general election next year, the commission said here on Tuesday.

An official of the Legal Bureau of the commission who goes with single name Wiwin said that the commission would announce which parties would pass the verification on July 5 next year.

The registration was closed at midnight on Monday after several parties registered their participation, Wiwin told Xinhua.

Twenty-four political parties contested in the Indonesia's general election in 2004.

Indonesia is to hold direct legislative and presidential elections in 2009.
