Gunfighting and explosions rocked a celebration gathering in Afghan capital Kabul Sunday morning, casualties feared, a Xinhua reporter on the spot said.

The unexpected firing and blast at the function being held with presence of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and many top-rank officials had forced all the notables to move out of the scene. The president was safe after the attack.

A Xinhua reporter on the spot saw blood of soldiers spattered on the site and local TV reported a lawmaker and some ministerial-level officials were transported to hospital for treatment.

A Taliban spokesman told Xinhua via phone from an unknown location that the Taliban fighters had fired some five rockets to the site.
