Sri Lanka suffered an island wide power outage Sunday as the country was celebrating the traditional New Year.
DR Pulleperuma, General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board(CEB), the state power authority said that it was caused by the tripping of a power generator at the Victoria power station in the central province.
The outage happened at 10.35 a.m. local time (0505 GMT) and was in force for over 2 hours. "We were trying to restore power stage by stage," Pulleperuma said.
The island's Sinhala majority community and the Tamil Hindu minority community were preparing to celebrate the traditional New Year with rituals performed at auspicious times.
