The South Pacific nation of Tonga will hold general elections in April, Matangi Tonga Online reported on Wednesday.

The election of the Nobles will be held on April 23 while voting for the People's Representatives would be held a day after.

Tonga's election officer Pita Vuki said registration of voters will be published on Feb. 14 and the nomination for candidates will be held on Feb. 27.

It was anticipated that this year's election will be an intense contest between new candidates and incumbent members of the parliament.

Tonga has a population of over 110,000.
