A German has been kidnapped by unknown persons in western Afghan province of Herat, a local police official said Monday.

The man, kidnapped on Sunday, converted to Islam four years ago and has been living in Herat city as a carpenter, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity, saying he is not authorized to speak to the media.

"The German married an Afghan lady, who had not been divorced by her ex-husband," the official said. "Enmity might be behind the kidnapping."

Herat's provincial police chief, Mohham Juma Azim, is said to be with a meeting, when his phone was reached by Xinhua.
