The United States Embassy in Manila Thursday advised Americans to stay away from the vicinity of the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City where a group of Filipino military personnel and their supporters are holed up after walking out of a court hearing to protest the government.
In a public announcement, the embassy said Americans should avoid the area as emergency vehicles and personnel are on standby near the hotel and are causing considerable traffic delays.
"The parties involved in the 2003 Oakwood Mutiny have walked out of the Makati Regional Trial Courthouse in protest of court proceedings. Approximately 50 individuals are demonstrating along Makati Avenue in the vicinity of the Manila Peninsula Hotel. All are encouraged to avoid these areas," the embassy said.
The embassy did not make further comment on the on-going event.
A group of Filipino military personnel awaiting court trials for suspected role in coups Thursday staged a protest against the government which resulted in an on-going standoff with the government in a five-star hotel in Makati City, the financial hub of the country.
