The Palestinian officials Friday called off a march to Lebanon's border with Israel after the Lebanese army refused to give clearance to the demonstration, media reports said.

The Lebanese army announced earlier this week that it will turn areas close to the Israeli border into a "closed military zone," in order to press the Palestinian organizers to postpone Lebanon's second pro-Palestinian protest, the reports added.

Six people died of Israeli fire in mid-May during a large scale protest to mark the Nakba Day, Arabic for catastrophe, and the day of the establishment of the state of Israel.

Meanwhile, a security source told Xinhua that Israel had increased border patrols in anticipation of Sunday's march and warned protestors against approaching the border a second time. Lebanon's army also stepped up security measures in the south ahead of the weekend.
