Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Thursday called on Israel to exercise restraint over the Gaza strip issue.
Rice made the appeal when having breakfast with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Japanese media reported. She told reporters after the breakfast that missile attacks targeting Israel must stop in the Gaza strip and the Israeli side should also exercise restraint.
Rice said she conveyed to Olmert the United States' concern over the humanitarian situation in the Gaza strip, while Olmert for his part pledged again to push forward the peace negotiation with the Palestinians.
Rice concluded her two-day visit to Japan in the morning. Olmert, who arrived in Japan on Monday, will leave Tokyo for home later in the day.
