Gun battles between Afghan troops and Taliban insurgents have left two soldiers and seven militants dead in southern Afghanistan, a statement of Afghan defense ministry released Wednesday said.

"Two soldiers were martyred and six others sustained injuries as they came under direct attack of insurgents in Maiwand district of Kandahar province on Tuesday while a day earlier seven rebels were killed and another wounded in Kajaki and Nawzad districts of Helmand province," it said.

Taliban has not made any comment.

Both Helmand and Kandahar have been considered as hotbed of Taliban militants.

Three bombing attacks left some 150 people dead and dozens injured in Kandahar province last week.
