The Japanese Foreign Ministry said Saturday that a Russian air force bomber briefly intruded into Japan's airspace in the morning and Japan filed a strong protest over the intrusion, Kyodo News said.
According to the report, a Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bomber intruded airspace over the southern part of the Izu Island chain at around 7:30 a.m. local time (2230 GMT, Friday). The intrusion lasted about three minutes over areas near the uninhabited isle of Sofugan, about 650 kilometers south of Tokyo, it said.
Over 20 Japanese Air Self-Defense Force fighter jets, includingF-15 fighters scrambled after the incident happened, Kyodo said.
