An American soldier was killed in a roadside bomb explosion in the Iraqi capital on Thursday, the U.S. military said on Friday.

The incident occurred when a roadside bomb went off near the soldier's vehicle while conducting combat operations in Baghdad, the military said in a statement.

The name of the deceased soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq to about 3,943 since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
