The U.S. government through its embassy here expressed on Monday its condolences over the death of former Indonesian President Soeharto.
"President Soeharto led Indonesia for over 30 years, a period during which Indonesia achieved remarkable economic and social development," Ambassador Cameron R. Hume said in a statement.
"Though there may be some controversy over his legacy, President Soeharto was a historic figure who left a lasting imprint on Indonesia and the region of Southeast Asia," he said.
Soeharto died at the age of 86 on Sunday after being treated for multiple organ failure for 24 days at a Jakarta hospital.
