Pakistan Railways Thursday reopened the rail track between the southern port city of Karachi and Lahore for traffic after repairing the damaged track, Secretary of Pakistan Railways Ghiasuddin said.

Ghiasuddin was quoted by the Associated Press of Pakistan as saying that the track was badly damaged due to derailment of train near Sukkur and railway engineers have vigorously worked to repair it.

Traveling from Karachi to eastern border city of Lahore, the Karachi Express, with some 900 passengers heading home for the Islamic holiday of Eid ul-Adha, derailed near Mehrabpur, some 400 north of Karachi, at about 2:25 a.m. on Wednesday (2125 GMT Tuesday).

At least 58 were killed and more than 120 others were injured in the train accident.
