A ferry heading to Algeria was forced to return to the French port of Marseille and over 1,400 passengers on board were evacuated Saturday after receiving a bomb alert, which proved to be a hoax later, police said.

The ferry had left the port when an anonymous caller told Algerian consulate in Lyon that a car packed with explosives was on board.

However, bomb disposal experts found no explosives and the alert was soon lifted.

Algeria saw one of the country's deadliest assaults on Tuesday when a twin car bombing claimed the lives of more than 30 people, including 17 U.N. staff members working in the country.
