Two soldiers from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed and three others were wounded when their convoy struck an improvised explosive device Wednesday in eastern Afghanistan.

"These soldiers gave their lives in order to provide a safe and secure environment for the people of Afghanistan," said Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco, an ISAF spokesman.

In accordance with ISAF policy, the casualty's nationalities were not released prior to the relevant national authority doing so.

Some 55,000 international troops are being deployed in the war-torn country for keeping security and fighting the militants.

Afghanistan witnessed the bloodiest violence in 2007 as rising militancy-related violence and conflicts have killed over 6,000 people mostly insurgents this year.
