The United Russia Party led by President Vladimir Putin will pick its candidate for next year's presidential election on Dec. 17, Interfax news agency quoted senior party member Valentina Matviyenko as saying.

Russia's presidential election is scheduled for March next year, when Putin, banned by the constitution to serve a third consecutive term, is expected to step down as president.

Preliminary results showed the pro-Kremlin party has obtained the majority of votes in Sunday's parliamentary elections.
