Three paratroopers were killed and five others were injured during a training session at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2007 in the sea nearby Kuala Muda, northern Kedah state, in Malaysia on Sunday morning.
138 paratroopers of the 10th Briged Para team of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) took a training session for the opening ceremony of the LIMA, according to a statement released by RMAF.
However, due to the shifting direction of wind, some of the paratroopers landed away from the intended landing spot, leaving three drowned and five others injured.
"Strong gusts of wind pushed them out to the sea near the KualaMuda beach, not far from the Langkawi International Airport. Three of them were drowned while five others were rescued," Malaysian national news agency Bernama quoted a police spokesman as saying.
The injured have been sent to the Langkawi Hospital for treatment.
