The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) says in its Charter adopted here Tuesday that the organization shall promote its common ASEAN identity and a sense of belonging among its peoples in order to achieve its shared destiny, goals and values.

As the regional grouping becomes 40 years old this year, it established the mini-constitution after some three years' preparation.

The Charter says ASEAN shall have an anthem. The grouping's motto shall be "One Vision, One Identity, One Community."

It also stipulates that Aug. 8 shall be observed as ASEAN Day.

ASEAN was established on Aug. 8, 1967, in Bangkok by the five original member countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined on Jan. 8, 1984, Vietnam on July 28, 1995, Laos and Myanmar on July 23, 1997, and Cambodia on April 30, 1999.

The organization has already had its flag and emblem.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
