Portugal, the current EU presidency, Tuesday expressed its concern at Israel's decision to reduce the fuel supply to the Gaza Strip.

"The EU is concerned to see Israel's decision to reduce Gaza's fuel supply, a basic service for the civilian population," it said in a statement.

It called for attention to the negative impact of these measures, imposed by Israel Sunday, on Gaza residents, who are already living in very hard conditions.

The EU, despite condemning the continuous attacks on Israel and acknowledging its legitimate self-defense right, will do everything possible to guarantee Gaza inhabitants' urgent and humanitarian needs, it said.

Israel's sanctions against Gaza may also include electricity shut-offs, which would interrupt the proper functioning of hospitals and other humanitarian installations.
