The United States is working with the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council as well as Germany on a third resolution to punish Iran for its defiance over its nuclear program, the State Department said Thursday.
The new resolution "would increase the existing sanctions that already are placed on Iran as a result of their failure to comply with the previous resolutions that have been out there," State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said.
Pushed by the United States, two UN Security Council resolutions have been passed to punish Iran for its defiance on its nuclear issue.
Washington has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. Iran has denied U.S. charges, insisting that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
