Finnish president Tarja Halonen sent a congratulatory message to the former U.S. vice president AlGore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007, the Finnish presidential office said Friday.
Halonen said in her message that she is very pleased to see that the pioneering work in the area of climate change has been recognized in such an honorable way.
"Well-being for mankind and nature go hand in hand. Sustainable development on a global scale can become a reality if we take true care of people and if we have a strong environmental awareness," Halonen said in the message to Al Gore and R.K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
"There are positive signs of attitudes changing and of a stronger common will to act on climate issues," she added.
Raino Heino, chairman of the Finnish group at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, also said Friday he was pleased with the Nobel committee's decision on the peace prize, adding the joint award might influence U.S. views on international climate cooperation.
