An American soldier died of injuries sustained from "enemy gunfire" in Salahudin province, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.

The Task Force Lightning soldier's death occurred on Monday, a military statement said without providing further details.

The soldier's name is being withheld bending notification of next of kin, the statement said.

The latest death brings the number of U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq to about 3,800 since the outbreak of the Iraqi war in 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
