Japan's outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Sunday apologized in a letter for his abrupt resignation that led to a political vacuum.

Abe, who has been under treatment in hospital since he announced resignation on Sept. 12, also said he would support Yasuo Fukuda, who was elected Sunday as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to succeed Abe, in a letter delivered to a party meeting to elect the new leader.

After LDP's crushing defeat in July's upper house election which cost the party's long-held majority in the chamber, Abe did not immediately quit to take responsibility, as urged by many politicians. However, two days after making policy speech and less a month after he reshuffled the Cabinet, he abruptly announced resignation.

The decision has been slapped by both oppositions and some members of the ruling camp, for wasting tax money for the 13-day adjournment of the parliament due to his sudden resignation.
