Some 5,000 Spanish and Portuguese farmers on Monday paraded through the center of the Portuguese town Oporto, demanding a new agricultural policy from the European Union.
The National Agricultural Confederation, the European Agriculture Coordinator, and the Spanish branch of the Farmers and Livestock Breeders Organization organized the protest, which occupied the center of town for an hour.
At around 4:00 p.m. local times, protestors toured the city, and then marched to the Alfandega Convention Centre, where the ministerial meeting was taking place.
The Federation's Armando Carvalho said farmers were demanding that the new Common Market agreement focus on small producers.
"The family farm is under strong attack," he said. "and the smallest farmers are growing ever smaller," he said.
The protestors expected a hearing with Portuguese agriculture minister,Jaime Gama, the host of the event, to deliver their protest.
