An Indian state is building an open-air prison for old lifers, the Times of India newspaper reported Sunday.
It will be ready in three months in Buxar district in the north Indian state of Bihar, its Principal Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah said. The plan was cleared by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Old lifers, Amanullah said, would be shifted to the minimum security prison, where they would live with their families and would be allowed to take up job of their choice within prescribed limits.
Amanullah said he would also hold a meeting of state officials on Sept. 25 over proposals to set free some old people jailed for petty crimes.
They will be released on Oct. 2 in consultation with the judiciary, the report quoted him as saying.
Bihar is an Indian state notorious for lawlessness, many prisons there are extremely crowded.
