Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, left Beijing Wednesday morning for Japan on a week-long official goodwill visit.
Jia is invited by the Japanese government.
The year 2007 marks the 35th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan relations and it is also designated as the China-Japan culture and sports exchange year.
"China would like to work together with Japan to push forward our strategic relationship for mutual benefits based on the three key political documents, so as to promote all-round cooperation and expand people-to-people exchanges," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said last week when asked to comment on the tour.
