Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Sunday ruled out the possibility of a coalition government, saying that new elections will be called if his New Democracy party fails to win a majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

During an interview with local newspaper "Eleftheros Typos", Karamanlis said that cooperation with any other parties likely to get seats in parliament was impossible.

"Therefore, in the case of a lack of one-party majority, it is certain that we will go to new elections," he noted.

The prime minister said if re-elected, his top priorities are to deal with the ailing social insurance system and continue reforms in the fields of economy and education.

Karamanlis and his New Democracy party came to power in March 2004 and the parliamentary elections will be held on Sept. 16.
