"Following a meeting with Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, the European Commission is willing to carry out immediately the necessary joint Commission/PA audits to ensure that fuel aid in Gaza remains properly managed," said the statement.

The decision to suspend fuel aid led to an electricity cutoff in all Gaza City, as well as the strip''s central and northern areas. Official figures said that more than 600,000 Palestinians suffered from the power blackout in the past week.

Meanwhile, Ghazi Hamad, spokesman for Hamas administration in Gaza, welcomed the EU decision to renew funding the fuel shipments.

He said that Hamas was ready to cooperate with any investigation committee to look into the allegations, raised by the Palestinian caretaker government in Ramallah, that Hamas controls the electricity company.

Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June after fierce clashes with rival Fatah movement led by President Mahmoud Abbas.

In response, Abbas sacked the Hamas-led coalition government in Gaza and formed the new government, which accused Hamas of seizing the revenues of the EU-funded company.
