Czech President Vaclav Klaus said the government should respect public opposition to the planned U.S. missile shield in the country, the official news agency reported on Friday.

The report cited Klaus as saying in an interview to Freies Europa that public poll results against the U.S. shield should be respected since these polls reflected people's genuine opinions concerning the issue.

The United States is planning to install parts of its missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, in what it has described as efforts to intercept rockets fired against it from the Middle or Far East.

The move met strong opposition from Russia, which insists this plan threatens its security.

Klaus also criticized the government for its inaction to explain to the public the role of the shield. He said officials should play a part in clarifying the degree and nature of possible threats.

According to a recent poll, more than two-thirds of Czech citizens disagreed with the installation of the base. The government parties are not united on the issue either.
