The early Ukrainian parliamentary elections should be held as scheduled on Sept. 30, said a senior government official here on Thursday. Although any situation is likely under the current legal system, the date for early parliamentary elections should not be changed, Marina Stavniychuk, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko's representative at the Constitutional Court, told a press conference. On Monday 46 parliamentarians demanded a Constitutional Court ruling on the legitimacy of the early elections decree signed by Yushchenko. The court is assessing their application. Ukraine plunged into a political turmoil in April, when Yushchenko signed a decree dissolving parliament and calling for early elections.
His rival, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich rejected the decree, saying it was unconstitutional. On May 27, both men agreed to hold early elections after a one-day meeting, diffusing the months-long political crisis that had nearly turned violent. On June 5, Yushchenko signed a decree, officially setting the early parliamentary elections for Sept. 30.
