Parliamentary elections in Madagascar to be held in September

Madagascans are set to go to polls on September 23 to select legislatives in a national election.

The decision to hold earlier elections for the lower house of the parliament, the National Assembly, was made at a council of Ministers meeting, convened by Madagascan President Marc Ravalomanana here on Wednesday, it was officially announced on Thursday.

The ministers had agreed to reduce the number of deputies from the present 160 to 127 for the next National Assembly, the French- language daily, Le Quotidien, reported here on Thursday.

Distribution of the 127 legislatives, who would be elected in 119 districts over the island country, and their representative function were defined at the meeting.

The National Assembly, the term of which should have been over in May next year, was dissolved on Thursday to pave the way for earlier elections of the house.
