The sole female member of parliament in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has retained her seat in the recent national elections, Australian Broadcasting Corporation ( ABC) radio reported Tuesday. The Australian-born Dame Carol Kidu has been re-elected for what is expected to be her final term in parliament. It appears Dame Carol will again be the only female MP in parliament when the government is formed next month.
The country's national elections began on June 30 and ended in mid-July after polling was extended for five days due to bad weather. There are more than 80 seats in the 109-member parliament that still need to be decided. PNG Prime Minister Michael Somare's National Alliance party is leading over other parties in the national elections. The party winning the most seats will be invited by the governor-general to negotiate with other parties and independents to form a coalition government.
The National Alliance won that right in the 2002 election with 19 seats. Election officials hope counting across PNG will be concluded by July 30, but the shape of the new government is unlikely to be known until some time in August, according to ABC.
