Turkey bans radio, TV programs for candidates of parliamentary elections

Turkey's Higher Board of Election ( YSK) declared here Friday a halt to all kinds of radio and TV broadcast relating political parties and candidates of the parliamentary elections to be held on Sunday.

Programs consist of information that might be influential on voters such as results of public opinion surveys, polls, forecasts, mini referendums via various communication channels will be banned as of midnight Friday, said the YSK.

More than 42.5 million registered voters out of the population of some 70 millions will cast votes at nearly 16 million ballot boxes in 85 electoral zones across the country to send their representatives to the 550-seated parliament on Sunday.

Political parties and independent candidates have been carrying out elective campaign all over the country for almost two months.

The YSK also banned the political parties that will participate in the Sunday election from propaganda activities from 6:00 p.m. ( 1500 GMT) on Saturday.

Radio and TV channels that do not act in conformity with the regulations regarding broadcast bans will be punished by the YSK.

The prohibition will be end at midnight of Sunday.
