Slovenian parliament speaker France Cukjati announced Friday that his country will hold presidential elections on Oct. 21, according to news reaching here from Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia.

The new president will replace Janez Drnovsek and will take office a week before Slovenia takes on the rotating European Union (EU) presidency in January 2008.

Drnovsek, whose five-year term will end in December, said he would not run for a second term.

So far, eight candidates have said that they would run in the elections, including Former Prime Minister Lojze Peterle, former central bank governor Mitja Gaspari and former diplomat Danilo Turk.
