A suicide bombing killed nine Afghan policemen and injured 11 others in Spin Boldak district of the southern Kandahar province on Thursday, provincial police chief Syed Aqa Saqib told Xinhua.

A suicide bomber attacked a police checkpoint in the district when some policemen were having lunch, Saqib said.

A building was torn down by the powerful blast, which killed nine policemen and injured 11 others, he said.

No one has claimed responsibility, but Taliban militants have carried out similar attacks frequently.

Spin Boldak, a district bordering Pakistan, has witnessed suicide bombings from time to time.

Another suicide bombing killed three Afghan guards and one driver of a U.S. security company in Spin Boldak on April 15.

Still another suicide blast killed three Afghan civilians and injured eight others at a police checkpoint in the district on March 13.

Due to rising Taliban insurgency, over 2,600 persons, mostly Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
