Four Palestinians, including three Hamas militants, were killed during an Israeli ground operation in central Gaza Strip on Thursday morning, Hamas, witnesses and hospital officials said.

In a statement sent to the press, an armed wing of Hamas movement announced the death of three of its members "who were killed in direct clashes with an Israeli special force which infiltrated into the east of al-Burij refugee camp."

"The fighters of Ezz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades discovered the force near an apartment building and exchanged fire with them, leading to the death of three fighters and the injury of two," it added.

Officials at al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza Strip said three people were killed immediately and the doctors failed to save the life of a fourth man who suffered critical wounds.

But the hospital officials didn't disclose the identification of the fourth victim.

Tens of tanks, backed by helicopter gunships, rolled into central Gaza Strip refugee camps of al-Burij and al-Maghazi in early hours on Thursday in the second such invasion since Hamas seized control of Gaza Strip last month, witnesses said.

They added that the Apache helicopters and the tanks fired missiles at the crowds of militants and people in the two areas.

Some of the tank shells have resulted in serious wounds among some of the militants, the hospital officials said, expecting the death toll to rise.
