Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a telephone conversation on Wednesday evening, the two agreed to meet soon.

A statement issued by Israeli Prime Minister's office said that Olmert congratulated Brown on his appointment and wished him success.

Olmert also congratulated the British people on the release of the BBC journalist Alan Johnston, who was freed earlier Wednesday after being held hostage in the Gaza Strip for nearly four months.

In addition, the Israeli Prime Minister Olmert expressed his appreciation on the recent actions of the British security forces in thwarting bomb attacks.

The statement said that the two men agreed to meet soon and to maintain close ties in order to advance bilateral relations.

Brown, who had been the treasury chief for a decade, became the British Prime Minister on June 27 after his predecessor Tony Blair stepped down on the same day.
