United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) director general Koichiro Matsuura welcomed Wednesday the release of BBC correspondent Alan Johnston, who had been held captive by militants in Gaza for the last 114 days.
"I am relieved and happy that Alan Johnston has finally been freed safe and sound," said Matsuura, after the journalist was released.
"Johnston and his family demonstrated remarkable courage during this terrible event," he said, adding "it is absolutely necessary for journalists to be able allowed to work in such an environment without fearing for their safety."
"It is now up to the Palestinian authorities to do everything possible to ensure the perpetrators of the act are quickly identified and brought to justice," he said.
