Afghan police killed seven Taliban militants in the southern Zabul province Tuesday, a local official said Wednesday.

Some Taliban insurgents attacked a police checkpoint in Shahjoy district on Tuesday afternoon, Gulba Sha Alikhil, spokesman for provincial governor, told Xinhua.

The police fought back, killing seven enemies and injuring six others, he said, adding there were no casualties of the police.

Meanwhile, a clash on Tuesday injured seven Taliban rebels and two policemen in the central Ghazni province, provincial police chief Alishah Ahmadzai said.

Due to rising Taliban insurgency, over 2,600 persons, most of whom were Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
