The 9th African Union Summit closed Tuesday midnight after three days of meeting on the continent's political and economic integration to pursue the goal of a United States of Africa.
The African leaders issued a declaration at the end of the meeting, saying there is need to accelerate economic and political integration of the African continent, including the formation of a union government for Africa.
However, the leaders gave themselves more time to study how to achieve it in the declaration .
In the three days of heated debates, a few leaders (represented by Senegal and Libya on the one hand) wanted to set up a continental African government immediately, and some others (represented by Nigeria and South Africa) favored a more gradual, step-by-step approach.
The leaders agreed to commission detailed studies on the contents of the Union Government concept and its relations with national governments, according to the declaration.
The studies will also involve the identification of the Union Government's domains of competence and the impact of its establishment on the sovereignty of member states, as well as the elaboration of a roadmap and time-frame for establishing the Union Government
The outcome of the studies will be submitted to a Committee of Heads of State and Government, which will make appropriate recommendations to the next AU summit.
